CLASSY CARICATURE DRAWING: SERIOUSLY PLAYFUL CARICATURING
Instructor: Allen Schmertzler

IN-PERSON CLASS

Sep 14 - Oct 26

Wednesdays | 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

All Levels | Drawing

Grow your drawing skill and fine-tune your artistic perspective by learning the rich and age old art form of caricature portraits. This class is designed as an introductory admission ticket into the “amusement park’s House of Mirrors Caricature Wonderland.”

Learn to see shapes, proportions and mutual relationships to animate facial mass, while capturing the integrity of “likeness.” Acquire Superartist x-ray vision into human faces to discover each “structural” and “topographical” caricature, the major facial landmarks and muscles that enable human expressive emotions that mine one’s psychology. Get seduced by line quality and eye-popping volumetric caricatures. Leave flat on the ironing board, leave bland at the fast-food dumpster, elevate to the extra-ordinary drawing of portraits on steroids. Harvest your own visual voice to “spirit” caricatures.

Note: Class will be held in-person at Allen Schmertzler's home studio in SW Portland.

Using basic techniques and materials, Martin helps you create dynamic forms and spaces. Each technique builds on the previous, preparing you to create larger, more complex forms. The wire armature is a flexible line drawing in space that defines the planes of your final sculpture. Manipulate these lines to gain a more intimate understanding of your piece. Martin’s methods are both playful and enlightening. He encourages experiments and mistakes that result in surprising discoveries as you complete your sculpture. Bring a sketchbook, apron, disposable gloves and imagination. No previous experience necessary.

ABSTRACTION: WHAT, WHERE, WHY, WHEN, HOW, WHO? - ONLINE
Instructor: Jef Gunn

ONLINE CLASS
July 21 - August 25, 2022
Thursdays | 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
All Levels | Painting (any media)

Does abstraction matter? Who does it? What is it? Why do it?

There are many forms of abstraction and many ways that artists develop painting, going back millennia and in diverse cultures. This 6-week online course will explore the what, why, and how of abstract art! Abstract art is powerful and meaningful, but how and when is it used to best effect? In some ways, we can say that “all art is abstract.” Why? Let’s look, and see.

We’ll work with abstract approaches or “strategies” to making paintings ourselves. Participants can work in the medium of their choice. This will be fun and engaging. We’ll also explore what’s been done in the past and present, and how it was done. Understanding abstraction will improve your paintings generally, allowing you to see and think in terms of the painting’s structure and dynamics.

Throughout the course, we'll use an online photo sharing site for ongoing communication and critiques of our work. There will be instruction for photographing your work with your phone.

Zhaoming Wu: Portrait Painting Demonstration
Instructor: Zhaoming Wu

IN PERSON DEMONSTRATION
Wednesday, August 10, 2022
6:30 PM – 8:30 PM
$35 for participants, includes model fee and refreshments

Join OSA for an evening with Zhaoming Wu as he demonstrates a monochrome portrait painting while working from a live model. Influenced by the 19th century French painters, Zhaoming Wu describes his work as representational, but not traditional classical. This technique can be seen through the combination of more modern elements. Utilizing his knowledge of heightened colors and values, he makes powerful, conscious decisions about their application. Active for many years as both an artist and a teacher, Zhaoming has works exhibited in museums and private collections around the world.

Major awards and honors have been given to Zhaoming Wu. These organizations include the International Artist’s Magazine, Oil Painters of America and the National Oil and Acrylic Painter’s Society, among others. For 7 consecutive years, he was a juror of an international art contest at the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona, Spain.

OLD MASTER PAINTING METHODS: UNDERPAINTING AND COLOR PORTRAITS
Instructor: Randall Vemer

Tuesdays, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Class Starts on Sep 13, 2022
Location: Upstairs Studio

This fun class explores Baroque methods to achieve rapid success in painting portraits and figures. We will create Underpaintings using browns (known as Imprimatura), or black-and-white (known as Grisaille). The Underpainting is a fairly complete tonal rendering of the final painting. This process allows you to concentrate entirely on the tonal relationships of your composition, without having to worry about color.  As a final step we explore adding glazes and scumbles of warm and cool colors to make your paintings glow.

Randall, a professional Classical Violinist will lead you step by step through Classical Art principles in order to achieve remarkable success! This method has been employed for over 300 years in European art. In addition, it is FUN!  Supplemented with books, projected slides, weekly videos in advance or in class, personal email critiques, and classical props.

We will do copies of Masters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, Caravaggio, and DaVinci.

CEZANNE'S LESSONS FOR CONTEMPORARY PAINTING (ONLINE)
Instructor: Jef Gunn

ONLINE CLASS

Sep 21 - Dec 7

Wednesdays | 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Paul Cezanne is known as the father of modern art for a reason! Much of painting today can be traced to Cézanne’s influence! Through studying Cezanne’s methods, composition, and style, we will strengthen and improve our own painting skills. The idea with this class is not to have you paint like Cézanne, but to become free in your own painting, as your understanding of the true dynamics of paintings comes alive.

We'll examine how Cezanne brought life and energy to his work through structure, form, and distortion and apply these principles to our own paintings to enliven our work. Your painting and your seeing will open up and improve. Homework will include readings from the book Cezanne’s Composition by Erle Loran.

THE POWER AND POETRY OF TONALIST LANDSCAPES (ONLINE)
Instructor: Michael Orwick

Wednesdays, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Class Starts on Oct 12, 2022
Location: Online

In this class for oil and acrylic painters, you will learn to create beautiful Tonalist landscape paintings. This class will include informal lectures, instructor demos, group critiques, and one-on-one advice. Michael will demonstrate techniques that work for him, and help you discover what works best for your individual vision and voice. Classes are self-paced; you are able to watch demonstrations and concept breakdowns live (on Zoom) or at your convenience (recorded). Share your progress to our Private Facebook Group, where we help each other grow, and Michael is able to give constructive feedback. This class is open to all levels of painting experience.
