Create drawings that incorporate botanical subject and a pollinator. In this class we alternate between drawing plants and drawing bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. We will start with loose sketches, and progress into more refined drawings with added detail. We will explore colored pencil techniques including blending, layering and embossing. We will draw in realistic style but individual approaches and styles will be encouraged. We will look for inspiration at work of Maria Sybilla Merian and learn how to plan a simple yet effective composition. You can order specimens butterflies or moths for drawing from bioquip.com

In art, an underpainting is an initial layer of paint applied to a ground, which serves as a base for subsequent layers of paint. Underpaintings are often monochromatic and help to define color values for later painting. After doing a charcoal drawing, you will learn how to paint step by step like the Masters. You can transfer this technique with modern colors as well. Randall is a classically trained professional violinist and artist who brings classical techniques to his students.

Learn the art of block carving and printing to create your own original stamps. You will be guided in the design and transfer of your image onto a soft block and to use simple tools to cut your block and print with colored inks. Your finished stamps can be used to create many prints on paper and fabric. Repeat patterning will also be explored. Each student will create a batch of stamp blocks and create a run of prints.

It is often referred to as the “painterly print.” However, there are several techniques in this unique process which yields effects and imagery that can’t be achieved through painting. This class will focus on various monotype techniques – from the traditional to the experimental – while students are encouraged to pursue their own artistic voice. Ink and paper will be provided through materials fee.

The practical aspects of painting will be emphasized along with the cognitive demands of judging one’s work and that of others. Students may work in oils or acrylics.

Students work from a reproduction of a California Impressionist-type landscape to complete their own landscape painting. Craft elements such as composition, building a painting from an underpainting stage, brush work, color mixing, and edge work are all emphasized. For three or four weeks in the middle of the 14 week term, students will work on their own individual still life. Working directly from a very simple motif of their own choosing, the student will learn to enhance their visual perception skills and ability to depict form, lighting, and depth.

Techniques to take our paintings to the next level of expression. Let us take our paintings beyond the subject and composition and learn how to handle the paint and brushes in creative and new ways. Learn about making beautiful marks and the brushstrokes you want to paint. Learn about: Scumbling and glazing. Creating a wide variety of expressive brushstrokes. Making big bold statements with a loaded brushstroke. Dry brushing for optical mixing and creating quiet areas. Fixing and correcting brushstrokes. Using soft and hard edges to control the viewer and to develop a feeling of depth. Creating interesting edges. In this class, you are going to learn about and create your very own beautiful Tonalist painting, a Luminist painting and an Impressionist painting.

Art without Passport Series: The Art Critique: Making it Personal ONLINE Instructor: Greg Lewis ONLINE ZOOM CLASS

When artists present their works for public exhibit, both the trained and untrained viewer sees and forms an opinion. Three forms of art criticism will be discussed, along with a presentation of known artworks to critique. We'll introduce the critique styles of the late Robert Hughes, controversial and opinionated art critic and historian and the late Sister Wendy Beckett, art historian for the BBC series: The Story of Painting. Together, we will explore beyond the elements of art and the principles of design to formulate our own critique vocabulary.

 Layering and Glazing: The Next Level in Acrylic Painting ONLINE Instructor: Wayne Jiang are in your artistic journey.
We’ll explore classical, impressionistic, and modern painting styles and apply these styles in portrait, landscape, and still life paintings. By gaining color
theory and composition knowledge, your painting process will not only be enjoyable, but also successful. By the end of this class, you’ll complete
artworks suitable for framing. The more adventuresome students will learn advanced old master techniques such as layering and glazing. And Wayne
will help those who want to develop their own personal style or paint their own subject.
Another added bonus of this class is the guided museum tours. In these tours, Wayne will point out many of the subtle old masters techniques. With
plenty of time to talk about these techniques, you’ll get ideas how to apply these techniques in your own work.
Don’t have acrylic paint or canvases? No worries. High quality acrylic paint and painting surfaces will be provided for a small fee.

Would you like to learn to make your acrylic painting look like old masters oil paintings? Then this class is for you. Through a mixture of demos, step-by-step instruction of advanced techniques, slideshow presentations, and painting exercises, you will learn how to combine transparent and opaque layers of paint; how to use subtle glazes to create luminous and subtle colors; understand what combination of colors to use to achieve that old masters oil painting look from Johannes Vermeer to Maxfield Parrish. In addition, you will gain knowledge and skills in the following areas: brushstrokes, color theory, painting details, lighting, and rendering. We’ll use the Zoom videoconferencing system for this painting class. The online class will have slideshow presentations, painting demos, paint along with Wayne, and critiques. Students will have access to download a video file of the painting demo to refer to so they can paint along at home at their own pace.

Gustav Klimt (1862-1926) was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. Klimt is internationally noted for his paintings, murals, sketches, and other objects' d'art. Well known for his female and allegorical subject matter, later introduced the use of gold leaf in his paintings. Even today, Klimt's artworks still takes the viewer to a higher level. Avant Garde? Over the course of 7 weeks, you will learn how to create a folklife audio story using your phone as your recording gear. You will use your iPhone to record an interview, personal narrative, poem or spoken word to tell your story. If you don’t have an iPhone, any smartphone will work. In addition to creating a folklife audio story, we will also look at how we can add visual elements to create an audio visual story.
