RENAISSANCE/BAROQUE PAINTING ATELIER: UNDER PAINTING AND COLOR PORTRAITS IN THE CLASSICAL TRADITION Instructor: Randall Vemer Tuesdays, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PMClass Starts on Apr 12, 2022Location: Upstairs Studio This fun class explores Renaissance and Baroque methods to achieve rapid success in painting portraits and figures. We will create Underpaintings using browns (known as Imprimatura), or black-and-white (known as Grisaille).
The Underpainting is a fairly complete tonal rendering of the final painting. This allows you to concentrate entirely on the tonal relationships of your composition, without having to worry about color. As a final step we explore adding glazes and scumbles of warm and cool colors to make your paintings glow.
We will do copies of Masters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, Caravaggio, and DaVinci.
Randall, a professional Classical Violinist will lead you step by step through Classical Art principles in order to achieve remarkable success! This method has been employed for over 300 years in European art. In addition, it is FUN! ABSTRACTION: WHAT, WHERE, WHY, WHEN, HOW, WHO? - ONLINEInstructor: Jef Gunn ONLINE CLASS
July 21 - August 25, 2022 Thursdays | 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
All Levels | Painting (any media)
Does abstraction matter? Who does it? What is it? Why do it?
There are many forms of abstraction and many ways that artists develop painting, going back millennia and in diverse cultures. This 6-week online course will explore the what, why, and how of abstract art! Abstract art is powerful and meaningful, but how and when is it used to best effect? In some ways, we can say that “all art is abstract.” Why? Let’s look, and see.
We’ll work with abstract approaches or “strategies” to making paintings ourselves. Participants can work in the medium of their choice. This will be fun and engaging. We’ll also explore what’s been done in the past and present, and how it was done. Understanding abstraction will improve your paintings generally, allowing you to see and think in terms of the painting’s structure and dynamics.
Throughout the course, we'll use an online photo sharing site for ongoing communication and critiques of our work. There will be instruction for photographing your work with your phone.
